Amethyst

Amethyst Meanings

The name of this gemstone comes from the Greek word “amethyein”, which means “not drunk” and alludes to the detoxifying effect of the amethyst, which was supposed to prevent drunkenness. The Greeks therefore often carried it with them. Today we know that even the strong amethyst cannot protect against drunkenness.

However, the Greeks also wore the amethyst against sorcery and evil thoughts. He should protect against false friends, avert danger and turn bad thoughts into the opposite. In Roman mythology it was also called the Bacchus stone. This name goes back to the myth that the goddess Diana turned the nymph into an amethyst out of jealousy of a nymph’s love for Bacchus (the god of wine).

It is probably the best known and most popular representative of the quartz. This gemstone can be found worldwide and can be in crystal form as well as a massive variety. Since the Minoan culture of the Bronze Age, the amethyst has accompanied royal rulers as a gemstone or in ceremonies. The crystal can still be found today in the bishops’ rings of the Roman Catholic and Lutheran Churches.
