Peridot Meanings

Peridot, also called chrysolite (Greek for goldstone), is a particularly pure variety of the mineral olivine. The name chrysolite is obsolete, because it denoted not only the peridot, but also many other color-like stones.

The origin of the name “peridot”, which appeared in many variants in the English and French-speaking countries in the Middle Ages, is unclear. Possible original names could be the Latin paederos ‘opal’ and Arabic farīda’ with the meaning unique’ as a designation for a precious gemstone.

Effects of Peridot

A stone of transformation, Peridot is excellent for use in recovery from tobacco or inhalant dependencies, as well as other addictions. More importantly, it is a wounded healer stone, serving as a vital guide in facilitating healing processes that help others going through what you have already overcome. Peridot honors Pax, the Roman Goddess of Peace and Prosperity. She is often depicted holding an olive branch of peace and serenity, and a cornucopia symbolizing plenty and good harvest.

Peridot also honors Pele, the Hawaiian Goddess of Fire and Volcanoes, with all its power and capriciousness. In ancient Hawaiian chants, she was described as “She-who-shapes-the-sacred-land” and her temper was known to be both as abundant and dangerous as the lava. Glistening green peridot is a volcanic gem formed in the deep fires of the earth; on Hawaii, it is treasured as the tears of Pele.

Crystals of green and gold honor Persephone, the Greek Goddess of Spring. She represents celebration and the Earth alive with new growth.
