tourmaline black

Tourmaline Black Meanings and Occurence

The most common type of tourmaline is the schorl, which makes up ninety-five percent of all tourmalines in nature. It is black, sometimes so deep blue that it appears to be black. The term “schorl” was in use before 1400 and was named after a town in Saxony, Germany, where black tourmaline was found in nearby tin mines.

Needles of black tourmaline or schorl can also be embedded in clear quartz and are then called tourmaline quartz or tourmalate quartz. It is believed that the combination of clear white and radiant black creates a perfect polarity of energies, a manifestation of light and dark forces uniting for a common purpose. It is considered a symbol of great happiness.
